Happy Birthday, Loretta Lynn!

Loretta was among my first true role models, and so much of who I am today comes from taking her records to heart. She taught me to always be spunky and brave, to never feel ashamed of coming from nothing, and of course the magic of AquaNet. Thank you, Loretta Lynn!! I love you more than my Irish setter ♥

Somewhat tangentially... the stars have aligned, and the universe has sent me my Spirit Dress. It is a '60s two-piece square dancing set; snagged for $15 on eBay-- more than I usually spend, but not too bad, and I guess that's the nice thing about tax refunds. The hint of Victorian gothic on top of pure country-western kitsch makes my little heart sing; it looks the way my soul feels, haha.

PS: Loretta fans, have you read her new memoir? I think it's about the stories behind her lyrics. Can't wait 'til next month when I'm done with school, and I'll finally have time to read non-school related books :)

Have a magnificent weekend!

  1. Happy Birthday Loretta, what a wonderful lady. You look delightful in your dress. I'm sure that if she ever gets to see this post she will be so proud to know just how much she has inspired you. Hope you have a lovely weekend too. xx

  3. Happy Birthday indeed! I love Loretta too! Her lyrics are awesome. First City is my favorite country song ever (followed by "Fancy") I saw Loretta in concert a few years ago and her twin daughters were the opening act, and then they sang together. It was an awesome show, and people of all ages were there. It was at Cain's Ballroom which is an old concert/dance hall founded by Bob Wills. It was magic!
Your dress is adorable, the color and ruffle suit you perfectly!

  5. Here's to her! We're going to do a little record spinning, cake eating celebration in her honor later! She's such an amazing woman in every way. And wow, how pretty you look! You're doing Loretty proud! I hadn't heard about that memoir. Gotta read it. Do you know what that photo of her with the bug spray is from?

  6. That dress (or two piece) is adorable and really suits you! However, I'm ashamed to say I have never heard of Loretta Lynn... I'll listen to the links, though, seeing as she comes so highly recommended :)

  7. Heather, that sounds like such a delight! (Both the concert and the venue!) Ha, and "Fancy" is pretty great, I agree-- I love Bobbie Gentry's original version.

Eartha Kitsch, yikes, I forgot to credit my pictures!! Both pictures are from the galleries at lorettalynnfan.com, and that particular one from here: http://www.lorettalynnfan.com/apps/photos/photo?photoid=152114594
Unfortunately they don't give the show, but I'd guess Wilburn Brothers...?

  10. Yes, the photo with Loretta holding the can of bug spray is from the Wilburn Brothers Show when Loretta was a regular quest from 1963 until 1971. For more information about Loretta please join our facebook page.

  12. Susan, I hadn't even heard of Charline before now, if you can believe it... but thanks for brining her up, I looked her up and I really love her voice!! Also, it was fun to read that she was a bit of a rebel, who insisted on wearing pantsuits on stage.

Anon., thanks for clarifying!! Seeing her on Wilburn Bros re-runs when I was small was how I discovered her music :)

Thanks Hannah! Yeah, there are a few local antique stores near me where they have bargain racks (usually $10 and under) of as-is items, plus I am a pro eBay stalker, haha. A lot of my vintage is actually a little worse for wear up close (little bitty stains, pinholes, repairs, etc.) but still wearable, and I get it cheap that way!

  15. Love the 2 piece square dancing get up, Dakota. Happy Birthday to Loretta! She has had a profound influence on me as well. I truly admire her. I have not read her new memoir, but I'll be sure to just after I finish up Alan Lomax's "The Land Where the Blues Began." I also just finished a biography on Lomax,"Alan Lomax:The Man who Recorded the World," and as a fellow lover of old timey American music, I think you'd be really into it. Best of luck with your studies.

    1. Oh awesome, thanks for the recommendations, Crystal!! Of the Lomaxes I've only ever read John Lomax's "Adventures of a Ballad Hunter", but I'm eager to read of his son now too! Man, I wish song collecting was still a viable occupation, haha.
